- Staple
1) A town in England or on the continent to which English trade in *wool and other goods was confined. From the reign of Edward I, the first was Dordrecht, followed by Antwerp, Bruges and Middelburg (in Zeeland). In the Statute of Staples (1354) the staple towns under the crown were set as Bristol, Canterbury, Carmarthen, Chichester, Cork, Drogheda, Dublin, Exeter, Lincoln, London, Newcastle, Norwich, Waterford, Winchester and York; from 1392, the continental staple town was fixed at Calais (until Calais was retaken by France in 1558). -
2) The word was used of a particular fineness and length of wool fibre. -
